Founded on the grounds of providing its community with proficiency in English Language and Western-sciences, the founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan recognized the need of the hour to revive the Muslim community involvement in social and political bearings on the Indian forum. He founded the Aligarh Muslim University in 1877 under the name MAO (Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College) that consequently changed to AMU in 1920, opening its gates even to members of diverse communities and states. Offering over 300 courses in traditional and modern branches of education, it
lays out a carpet drawing students from all over the world with exclusive reservation for students from SAARC and Common-Wealth countries.

Internationally ranked among the QS World University rankings of 2018, AMU has also been endorsed with an “A” crediting by the NAAC and was ranked first among Indian Universities according to the Times Higher Education, India Ranking this year. It extends a platform that enriches its students not just through conventional courses like Social Sciences, Sciences and Humanities, but also paces in accordance with national growth providing specialized learning credits in the areas of technical, vocational and inter-
disciplinary studies. To ensure an over-all growth, Co – Curricular activities proffer all-round skill development to the student body by encouraging participation in various clubs like the AMU Drama, the Hindustani and western Music Club, the Literary Club and the Hobbies Workshop to list out a few.

Bringing to reality visions of the past, AMU in 2011 launched two new centers of study outside Aligarh w.e.f. at Murshidabad, West Bengal and at Mallapurum, Kerala state. These centers currently accommodate a teaching facility of MBA and Integrated Law courses. Walking uphill, carrying along a cherishing history, AMU envisions housing more than 10,000 students in both centers within the span of 10 years, with each student thoroughly trained in advance study and research. Deeming to be a proud Islamic Indian Institution, AMU is a living symbol of composite culture of India and a bulwark of its secular principles.
